What can you do?

If you are the practical type firstly, don't ask "Is there is anything I can do?" You may mean it at the time – but get real, -- they aren't going to ASK!

How about: Organizing meals to be brought in? A word of warning, if you take this on, it needs to be organized properly or it can become stressful for you and the recipient.

When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving me advice, you have not done what I asked.

When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn't feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings.

Anything starting with "At least." For example "At least she didn't suffer." Those two little words have a sting in them. They suggest the griever shouldn't be as sad as they are.

If you don't see the person that often – introduce yourself. Then let them know you've heard of their loss. They might worry that they have to break the news to YOU.
